The Custom-Home Low-Voltage Pre-Wire Checklist

Low-voltage planning should happen before insulation and drywall, while cable routes and framing are visible. Use this checklist during plan review and the pre-wire walk.

Service entrance and central rack

• Confirm internet and utility entry locations.
• Select a rack location with wall space, ventilation, service access, and adequate power.
• Plan patch panels, gateway, PoE switches, recorder, storage, and UPS capacity.
• Add conduit from the service entrance and toward accessible attic or crawlspace areas.

WiFi and wired devices

• Place ceiling access points from a coverage plan.
• Wire offices, media areas, televisions, gaming locations, and fixed equipment.
• Consider two or more drops at important work and entertainment locations.
• Include garages, patios, pools, outdoor kitchens, and guest spaces.

Security and property systems

• Plan camera views for entrances, driveways, yards, gates, garages, and equipment areas.
• Pre-wire doorbells, intercoms, access control, and gate locations.
• Plan fiber or conduit to detached buildings and long exterior pathways.

Closeout requirements

• Protect and label every cable during construction.
• Photograph routes before drywall.
• Terminate, test, and document completed runs.
• Allow for final WiFi tuning and owner orientation after the home is furnished.
